About Us

About Us:

Minke Marine A.L. LLC was established in 2023. It is a partnership formed by colleagues with decades of experience in both the marine and water treatment industries. Between them working with tanker installed inert gas systems from the 1970’s, ballast water treatment systems from the beginning (2004) and many water treatment, solids treatment and vapor control projects. This experience has given the partners in-depth knowledge about the fundamentals of water and gas control and handling, as well as decades of integrating hardware systems into a wide array of vessel types, 5,000 to 330,000 DWT. It is well understood; hardware systems intended to work with a vessel are not bolt on, they are always bolt in.

Minke Marine?

During a service call to a ship at anchor, founding partner Mr. Kevin McPherson saw the dense spiraling clouds of bubbles created by feeding Minke whales. Reminiscent of the dense bubbles made by the as yet nameless Air Lubrication System he was developing, a name was selected.

IP:

The idea for the Minke Marine Air Lubrication system (ALS) was established several years ago. A Patent was filed in 2016 and awarded in 2019, with a further patent issued in 2025.

Minke Marine Air Lubrication System (MMALS)

This is to confirm that DNV has performed a review of the documents specified in Appendix 1
with technical observations according to our references, related to Minke Marine A.L. LLC
design of Minke Marine Air Lubrication System (MMALS).

The Approval in Principle (AiP) review is done on the basis of application of DNV rules for
classification: Ships (RU-SHIP) July 2023, as below:

  • DNV RU-SHIP Pt.4 Ch…
  • DNV RU-SHIP Pt.6 Ch…
  • DNV RU-SHIP Pt.3 Ch…
  • DNV RU-SHIP Pt.3 Ch…
  • DNV RU-SHIP Pt.3 Ch…
  • DNV RU-SHIP Pt.3 Ch…

The attached appendix I lists the documents that have been assessed, while the below appendix II identifies design requirements and assumptions, issues that need to be clarified or amended in the final design. Compliance with assumptions and comments in Approval letter is a condition for the Approval in Principle.

The Approval in Principle does not imply relaxations related to a future ship specific classification and certification, for example to documentation requirements, certification requirements or technical requirements.

Sailing Quietly? Yes:

Minke Marine is very confident in the MMALS and happy with the performance demonstrated – so is the current owner. We have not pursued endless PR’s and LinkedIn updates, we’ve just quietly been going about proving the system, working with the owner who trusted us and invested in the Pilot Installation.

As that process comes to a close, we will be sailing a little less quietly, you will be hearing more from us.
